Determining the Essential Elements of an Academic Essay

There are several factors that distinguishes an academic essay from other kinds of essays, and generally, from other forms of writing. It is mostly written by academics in universities as part of their coursework tasks. Though an essay is generally defined as a short literary piece of a particular topic, the academic essay has developed its own distinct characteristics that set it apart from other forms of an essay.

Academic essays are unique from other essays due to the following properties:
  • The academic essay takes days or weeks to be completed. Depending on the specific requirements that professors ask from the students, the academic essay takes more than just an overnight to finish. This involves other tasks that contribute to the completion of the entire essay writing assignment. These minor tasks include research, creating an essay outline, finishing an essay draft and completing a final essay copy, among others.
  • The academic essay uses references. Since the academic essay deals with facts and concrete analyses of data, the writer must credit the other sources that are included as supporting data for the academic essay. This exercise is also another way of preventing the practice of plagiarism since academic essays deal with primary and secondary data all the time to make it valid.
  • There are no general rules in approaching an academic essay. The principle behind this property lies in Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, which succinctly explains that students have different distinct intelligences that they are experts of. Their intelligences will affect the way they approach their coursework, which also includes their academic essay writing task.
  • The academic essay does not stand without a statement or claim. Since the academic essay is one major evaluative tool that professors use to assess the progress of their students, it has to be both objective and subjective. Aside from pointing out the ideas that the essay requires the students to enumerate, they must also be able to include their own stand on the issue presented to demonstrate independent thinking and logical analyses.
  • The academic essay has a formal tone. An academic essay is mostly written for professors and other academic readers. This means that the content that the essay contains, along with the audiences the academic essay is intended for, calls for a more formal tone. Students cannot convince their professors and other readers of the ideas they have presented if they are not written formally. A formal tone also requires higher thinking, which is what professors are mostly aiming for their students to develop.

Essays and the Reference List

When writing essays for coursework tasks, or any other written piece for that matter, it is very important to provide the full details of all the sources of information used in completing the essay. Providing a list of references, or stating the sources of information allows the readers of the essay to refer to the sources in case they want to clarify a few things, or if they want to look further into the topic of the essay. Referencing also protects you, the author, from any problems related to plagiarised content – something that should be avoided especially when writing essays for academic purposes.

The reference list is clearly important for any written coursework piece. Here are a few guidelines you should consider when creating your reference list:

• Familiarise yourself with the many referencing systems and citation styles used in the academe. Being knowledgeable in the use of such systems will come in handy for future coursework tasks.

• The information listed in the reference list should be accurate and specific to allow readers to find the source easily.

• When creating your reference list, make sure to follow the system or style specified by the professor. Your instructor will require a type of referencing system depending on several factors, which include the subject matter and his personal preference.

• Keep track of the sources you use while in the process of writing your essay. Note down any information accurately. This way, you are making the process of creating the reference list easier for yourself. You also get ready and easy access to any of the sources should you need to verify any information.

Making a Presentable Essay

Students often struggle with making essays and other coursework tasks. Part of the challenge, aside from doing the research and writing the essay itself, is making the essay presentable to the readers. There are no set rules or instructions on how to do this, it all depends on the student writing the essay, and of course, his application of the few guidelines and tips that can help in making an essay more presentable to the audience:

  • Format the essay in such a way that it is easy for the reader to follow. Avoid writing a single block of sentences. If possible, separate the information into more readable and easily understandable chunks. Start the essay off with the introductory paragraph. This should provide the readers with a brief opening to the essay; the thesis statement should be included within this paragraph as well. Follow with the body of the essay – this can range from one to multiple paragraphs, depending on the author’s arguments and supporting data. Lastly, write a separate paragraph for the conclusion.

  • Ensure that the essay has a flow. This is very important. Maintaining a flow throughout the entire piece ensures that the readers are able to follow and understand the thoughts and ideas presented in the essay. This may be done through providing good transition sentences in between paragraphs.

  • Use a font that is easy on the eyes. The use of non-formal fonts should be avoided, especially when writing essays and other pieces for coursework tasks. The use of too small a font size should also be avoided, and of course, proper spacing and formatting should be practiced.

Essay Writing: Know what you need to write about

The title of this post would suggest that you, as the author of the essay, select a topic that you find interesting. Granted, doing so may help in topic selection and in writing the essay itself, however, that is not what this post is about.

This is about the meat of the essay. As students, you are sure to be writing an essay as fulfilment of certain academic requirements. Most coursework tasks such as these are delivered or assigned with a predefined topic, a statement or a question that you need to address.

Approaching an essay writing task without having a specific question to be answered can make the writing process harder. You need to have a certain focus to your essay, and that is where the central question comes in. The question allows you to hone in on what your professor requires you to include in the essay. It limits the scope of what could possibly be a very broad subject area.

Having to focus on a central question or statement will also make researching for the essay easier. Some of the advantages to having this type of focus in writing an essay include:

• You will have a fair idea as to what subject you need to focus on
• You become more selective when going through possible information you may include in your essay
• You can filter your resources, and limit your search to ones that are relevant to the thesis of the essay

When writing, keep the central question in mind. Make sure that all your arguments and statements are pointed towards that specific question. This helps in maintaining the flow of the essay, and more importantly, in keeping the direction of the piece.

When writing your essay, make sure to go over the statement or question provided by your professor and keep it in mind at all times while tackling the assignment. This will serve as an important reference when it comes to researching and writing your essay.
